1. What is an adjective?

An adjective tells us about a person, animal, place or thing.

It tells us what someone or something is like.

  • a big hotel
  • a small room
  • a happy girl
  • a beautiful town
  • a cold morning

Adjectives can tell us about:

  • size: big, small, large
  • age: young, old
  • colour: red, blue, green
  • feelings: happy, sad, tired
  • temperature: hot, cold, warm
  • quality: good, bad, nice
  • appearance: beautiful, clean, dirty
  • speed: fast, slow

2. Comparing two things

When we compare two people or things, we use the comparative.

With many short adjectives, we add -er.

small → smaller

  • The first room is small.
  • The second room is smaller than the first room.

big → bigger

  • Room 101 is big.
  • Room 102 is bigger than Room 101.

We often use than after the comparative.

  • Anna is taller than Maya.
  • The blue car is faster than the red car.
  • Today is colder than yesterday.

3. Comparing three or more things

When we compare three or more people or things, we use the superlative.

With many short adjectives, we add -est.

small → smaller → the smallest

  • Room 101 is small.
  • Room 102 is smaller.
  • Room 103 is the smallest.

big → bigger → the biggest

  • The first room is big.
  • The second room is bigger.
  • The third room is the biggest.

We usually use the before the superlative.

  • She is the tallest girl.
  • This is the cheapest café.
  • It is the coldest day.

4. More and most

Some adjectives are longer.

For these adjectives, we usually use more and the most.

beautiful → more beautiful → the most beautiful

  • The garden is beautiful.
  • The garden is more beautiful than the park.
  • This is the most beautiful garden.

comfortable → more comfortable → the most comfortable

  • This chair is comfortable.
  • This chair is more comfortable than that chair.
  • This is the most comfortable chair.

interesting → more interesting → the most interesting

  • The story is interesting.
  • The second story is more interesting than the first story.
  • The third story is the most interesting.

Other examples:

5. Some special adjectives

Some common adjectives are different.
