π A Halloween Night
It is Halloween. It is October 31. Tom and his sister Anna are very happy. They want to have a fun Halloween night.
Tom wants to be a vampire. He puts on black clothes and a mask. Anna wants to be a witch. She wears a black dress and a tall witch’s hat. She also has a broom. They both dress up and wear a costume.
Their parents help them decorate a house. They put pictures of a ghost, a monster, a skeleton, and a mummy on the walls. There is also a black cat in the garden.
In the garden, there is a big pumpkin. Tom and Anna carve a pumpkin. They make two eyes, a nose, and a big mouth. Then they put a candle inside. Now they have a pumpkin lantern, or Jack-o‘-lantern.
At seven o’clock, Tom and Anna go trick-or-treating with their friends. They go from house to house. At each house, they knock on the door.
When someone opens the door, the children say, „Trick or treat!“ The people give them candy and other treats.
At one house, a man is dressed as a wizard. He does a funny trick with his hands. He says, „I can do magic!“ The children laugh.
At another house, they see a bat, a spider, and a big spider web. Everything looks scary.
Then Tom sees an old haunted house. „Let’s go there!“ he says.
Anna is afraid. „I don’t want to go,“ she says.
Tom knocks on the door.
The door opens slowly.
A white ghost jumps out.
Anna screams!
Then the ghost takes off its clothes. It is their father!
Everyone laughs. It is a very fun Halloween night.

Remember how babies
learn a language:
Babies learn a language by listening.
They use their ears to hear sounds.
Their brain remembers these sounds.
Babies connect sounds with people and things.
They listen to their parents.
Then they copy the sounds they hear. They imitate words.
Slowly, babies learn to speak.
