Present simple
→ use it for things that happen regularly or are true now.

• I go to school every day.
• She lives in Chiang Mai.
• We usually eat dinner at 7.

Past simple
→ use it for things that happened and finished in the past.

• I went to Bali last summer.
• She visited Bangkok yesterday.
• We stayed there for five days.

Easy rule:
👉 every day / usually / often → present simple
👉 yesterday / last week / last summer → past simple

Ben’s Day in Texas

My name’s Ben. I live in Texas in the USA. I usually wake up at 7 o’clock. I get dressed and have breakfast with my family. I usually have cereal, fruit and a glass of milk. Then I brush my teeth and go to school.

School starts at 8 o’clock. I have English, maths, science and history. I like English because we read interesting stories and learn new words. Maths is sometimes difficult, but I like science. At lunchtime, I sit with my friends and we talk about our morning. School finishes at 3 o’clock.

A Visit to Angkor Wat

Last Saturday, Dara went to Siem Reap with his family. They wanted to visit Angkor Wat. Dara was very excited because it was his first visit.

“Are we at Angkor Wat now?” he asked.

“Yes, look!” said his father.

Dara looked at the temple. “Wow! It’s very big!”

They walked through the entrance and went inside. Dara saw tall towers, old stone walls and many trees.

“How old is this place?” he asked.

“Angkor Wat is more than 800 years old,” his father said. “It is a very important place in Cambodia.”

Dara looked at the walls. There were many beautiful pictures in the stone.

“What do the pictures show?” he asked.

“They show people, animals and stories from long ago,” his father explained.

Then they walked up some steps.

“Be careful,” said his mother. “The steps are very steep.”

Dara walked slowly. When he reached the top, he looked around.

“Look at the view!” he said. “I can see so many trees!”

His sister pointed at the temple. “And look at those towers!”

After the walk, the family sat under a tree and drank some water.

“I’m tired, but I really like Angkor Wat,” said Dara.

“Me too,” said his sister. “It is beautiful.”
