  • 🥳🏖️🥰Nyepi: the day Bali stands still (A2, present simple, part 1/2)🥰🏖️🥳

    • a 24-hour island of silence and reflection to welcome the Balinese New Year

Nyepi is the Balinese Hindu New Year. People celebrate it on the island of Bali in Indonesia. Nyepi is a very important holiday because it is a day of quiet and thinking. It usually happens in March, according to the Balinese Saka calendar.

The main purpose of Nyepi is to think about life, pray, and start the new year in a good way. On this day, people stay at home, do not work, and try to be better. There are four important rules called Catur Brata Penyepian. People cannot use fire or bright lights. They cannot travel or go outside. They cannot work or watch TV. The whole island is very quiet. Roads are empty. Shops are closed. Even the airport stops planes for one day.

The day before Nyepi is very busy. People make large demon statues called ogoh‑ogoh. These statues show bad spirits. At night, people burn the statues. This is to take away bad spirits.

The day after Nyepi is called Ngembak Geni. Families visit each other. They say sorry for mistakes and start the new year in a good way.

Nyepi is a very important holiday. It is a day to be quiet, think, and start again. Everyone on the island takes part, and Bali is very calm.

In 2025, I celebrated Khmer New Year with my family. It was a very important festival in Cambodia. The holiday was in the middle of April. Many people were happy.

Before the holiday, my family cleaned our house. We also decorated the house. We wanted a clean and nice home for the new year.

Many people traveled to their hometowns. I visited my grandparents. I was very happy to see them. We ate food and talked together.

My family went to the temple. We prayed and brought food for the monks. We asked for good luck and good health. Some people made small sand hills at the temple.

There were many fun activities. Young people played traditional games. They danced and listened to music. Many people laughed and enjoyed the festival.

    • Why Khmer New Year is the happiest and most exciting festival in Cambodia.

Khmer New Year is one of the most important festivals in Cambodia. It usually takes place in the middle of April. In 2026, it will be celebrated from April 14 to April 16. This festival marks the traditional New Year and the end of the rice harvest.

During Khmer New Year, many people travel back to their hometowns to spend time with their families. Before the holiday begins, people clean and decorate their homes. They want to start the new year in a clean and happy place.

Visiting temples is an important part of the celebration. Many families go to the temple to pray and bring food for the monks. They ask for good luck, good health, and success in the coming year. Some people also build small sand hills at the temple. This is a traditional religious activity.

Khmer New Year is also a time for fun. Young people play traditional games, dance together, and listen to music. There are many happy activities in villages and cities.

Another special tradition is pouring water on parents and grandparents. This shows respect and gives them good wishes for health and long life.

Khmer New Year is a joyful time when families and communities come together to celebrate and welcome a new beginning.

    International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is on March 8 every year. It is an important day for women all around the world. On this day, people talk about women’s lives and the problems they still have.

Women are also not always leaders in politics, business, or science. The world needs more women leaders and more women’s ideas.

  • 🌕Yadnya Kasada – Kasada festival at Mount Bromo, Indonesia, 30 – 31 May 2026 (email reply, A2, present simple) 🌕

    Dear Mr. Wolf,

Thank you for your email and for your interest in the Kasada Festival. Greetings from the front desk of the Wyndham Casablanca Jakarta.

The festival is called Yadnya Kasada. It takes place at Mount Bromo in East Java. Mount Bromo is an active volcano and a famous tourist destination. The Tenggerese people celebrate this festival every year. It is an important religious event for the local Hindu community.

During the festival, people bring offerings such as rice, fruit, vegetables, flowers, and sometimes animals like chickens or goats. In the evening and early morning, they walk to the crater of the volcano. They throw the offerings into the crater. They do this to thank God and to pray for safety, good health, and a good harvest.

The date of the festival changes every year because it follows the traditional Tengger calendar. It usually takes place in May, June, or July.

From Jakarta, you can travel by plane or train to Surabaya or Malang, and then continue by car to Mount Bromo. Many guests choose to join a tour package.

Please let us know if you need assistance with transportation or tour arrangements. We are happy to help you.

    Kind regards,
    Indra
    Front Desk
    Wyndham Casablanca Jakarta

  • 🐡🐠🐟🦈Traditional Fishing Festival at Boeung Trapeang Krom – 2026 (A2 intermediate, past simple, short answers, questions)🦈🐟🐠🐡

    • my visit

I visited the Traditional Fishing Festival at Boeung Trapeang Krom in Satum village, Thbong Khmum Province. It was on 14 February 2026. The festival showed old Cambodian fishing traditions and local culture.

After the rice harvest, the water in the rivers and lakes was lower. I saw people from the village and nearby areas come together to catch fish. They used nets, traps, and sometimes their hands. Everyone worked together to catch a lot of fish. It was interesting to see how they celebrated friendship and community while fishing.

During the festival, I watched many cultural activities. I saw traditional music and dancing. There were games for children and local food for everyone. I learned how local people caught fish. I even tried fishing a little myself.

The festival was very colorful and lively. I enjoyed the fish, the celebrations, and the friendly atmosphere. It was a good way to see Cambodian traditions and daily life. Families, children, and tourists were happy and excited. Visiting the Traditional Fishing Festival at Boeung Trapeang Krom helped me understand Cambodian culture and old customs. I will remember this festival for a long time.

  • 🌉🐏Two proud goats – getting wet (A1, beginners, present simple)🐏🌉

Two goats live near a river.
One goat is big. One goat is small.

There is a small bridge over the river. Only one goat can walk on it at a time.

One day, the big goat walks on the bridge. At the same time, the small goat walks from the other side. They meet in the middle.

The big goat says, “Move! I am big and strong.”
The small goat says, “Please do not be proud. We can both cross.”

Both goats are proud. They push each other.

They lose balance and fall into the cold river. Splash!

They swim to the shore. They are wet and cold.

    The lesson: Never be proud.

  • 🥳🛩️🎉Cambodian kites fill the runway at Siem Reap airport (A2, past tense, questions, answers, short answers)🎉🛩️🥳

    Basics of past simple
    check out first

This February, I traveled to Siem Reap in Cambodia. I wanted to visit the famous temples, especially Angkor Wat, but I was also lucky to see a kite-flying competition during my stay.

The festival took place at the old airport, which is now a large open field. When I arrived, I saw many colorful kites in the sky. Some were big and shaped like birds and dragons. Others were traditional Khmer kites. They made a soft musical sound when the wind blew. It was very beautiful and peaceful.

Many people joined the competition. Some were professional kite flyers, and others were local families. The judges watched carefully as the kites flew high in the sky. Everyone clapped and cheered when a kite stayed in the air for a long time.

There were also small food stalls around the field. I ate grilled chicken and drank fresh coconut juice. The atmosphere was friendly and happy. Children were laughing and running, and tourists were taking photos.

In the evening, the sunset was amazing behind the flying kites. It was a wonderful cultural experience, and I will always remember this special day in Siem Reap.
