1. Adjectives

An adjective tells us what a person or thing is like.

The waiter is polite.
The restaurant is quiet.
The food is good.
The driver is careful.


2. Adverbs

An adverb often tells us how someone does something.

The waiter speaks politely.
The guests speak quietly.
The cook works carefully.
The driver drives carefully.


3. Look at the difference

He is slow.
He walks slowly.

She is careful.
She works carefully.

He is polite.
He speaks politely.

slow → slowly
careful → carefully
polite → politely


4. The easy rule

Many words change like this:

adjective → adverb

slow → slowly
quick → quickly
quiet → quietly
careful → carefully
polite → politely
clear → clearly

We often add -ly.


5. More examples

The waiter is quiet.
He walks quietly.

The girl is quick.
She runs quickly.

The man is careful.
He drives carefully.

The teacher is clear.
She speaks clearly.


6. Some words are different

Some words do not change.

fast → fast
hard → hard
early → early
late → late

Examples:

He is a fast runner.
He runs fast.

She is a hard worker.
She works hard.

He is early.
He arrives early.


7. Good → well

This is important:

He is a good cook.
He cooks well.

She is a good singer.
She sings well.


8. Friendly

Friendly is an adjective.

The waiter is friendly. ✅

For an action, say:

The waiter speaks in a friendly way. ✅

Do not teach:

He speaks friendly. ❌


9. Remember

Adjective:

She is quiet.

Adverb:

She speaks quietly.

Adjective = what someone or something is like.

Adverb = how someone does something.

Remember how babies
learn a language:
