- THE important question:
why do you want this?
Sala Baï Hotel School is a hotel school in Siem Reap. The school helps young people from poor families by giving them training for jobs in hotels and restaurants. This year, 461 students applied for the new class. After the first checks, 391 students came to the final step: the motivation interview.
Before the interview, social workers visit the students’ families in different parts of Cambodia. They study the family situation carefully to make sure the students really need support. Only the students who pass this process can attend the motivation interview.
During the interview, teachers ask one important question: “Why do you want this?” At Sala Baï, motivation is one of the two most important qualities the school looks for. The reason is simple: the training programme is long and difficult. Students must study many hours, learn many skills, and also work in the school restaurant. Hospitality work needs energy, discipline, and hard work every day.
Motivation is like fuel. It gives students the strength to continue when the programme becomes difficult. The school provides good teachers and professional training, but training alone is not enough. Students also need strong personal motivation to succeed.
Sala Baï wants students who truly want to learn and improve their lives. With motivation and training, students can finish the programme, find good jobs, and become independent. They can also support their families and leave poverty behind.
For this reason, the question “Why do you want this?” is very important. It helps the school choose students who are ready to work hard and build a better future in the hospitality industry.
