Tom is a boy. Anna is a girl. They walk in the woods at night. It is very dark. The trees are tall and quiet. The wind is cold. Tom has a torch. The light is small, but it helps them see the path.

Anna feels scared. She hears a soft sound. “Did you hear that?” she asks. Tom looks around, but he sees nothing. They walk slowly. The leaves move under their feet.

Suddenly, the torch light shakes. It goes left, then right. A shadow moves behind a tree. Tom stops. Anna holds his arm. They are very still.

The sound comes again. Step… step… step…

“Who is there?” Tom says. No answer.

The torch light shows two small eyes in the dark. They shine like stars. Anna gasps.

Then, a small animal runs away. It is only a fox.

Tom and Anna laugh a little, but their hearts still beat fast.
