  • Kunthea talks about her work, her guests, and the busy and happy moments in the restaurant.

Listen to the story

My name is Kunthea. I am a young woman from Cambodia. I work as a waitress in the restaurant of a five-star hotel. I like my job, but some days are very busy.

My work day starts at 7 a.m. I put on my uniform and go to the restaurant. First, I check the tables. I clean them and put glasses and plates on the tables. Everything must look nice for the guests.

In the morning many guests come for breakfast. Some guests are very friendly. They smile and say “Good morning.” They say “thank you” when I bring their coffee or food. I like these moments because they make me happy.

When the restaurant is busy, I walk a lot. I carry plates and bring food and drinks to the tables. Sometimes many guests need help at the same time. One guest wants more coffee. Another guest asks for the bill. I must work fast.

Sometimes a guest is not happy. Maybe the food is cold or the order is wrong. I listen and say sorry. Then I talk to the kitchen and try to help the guest.

In the afternoon the restaurant is quiet. I clean the tables and talk with my colleagues.

At the end of the day I feel tired, but I feel proud because I work hard every day.
