The History of Valentine’s Day

A long time ago, in Rome, there was a priest named Saint Valentine. He lived around the year 270 A.D. The emperor did not want young men to marry because he thought soldiers should stay single. But Saint Valentine helped people who loved each other. He married couples in secret.

The emperor found out and was very angry. He put Saint Valentine in prison. While he was in prison, Saint Valentine became friends with the jailer’s daughter. He wrote her a small note and signed it, ā€œFrom your Valentine.ā€ After some time, Saint Valentine was executed because of what he had done. This was the first Valentine’s card.

People remembered his kindness and bravery. They wanted to celebrate love and friendship. They chose February 14 to honor him.

Today, people in many countries give cards, flowers, and gifts. They remember Saint Valentine and his story of love and courage. Valentine’s Day is a special day to show love, just like Saint Valentine did.
