What are ordinal numbers?
- Ordinal numbers tell us the order or position of things.
- They are not the same as numbers that show how many.
- Example:
- Number → how many: one, two, three
- Ordinal → order: first, second, third
1️⃣ Most ordinal numbers: add “-th”
- For most numbers, just add -th to the number.
- Examples:
- four → fourth
- six → sixth
- seven → seventh
- ten → tenth
Rule: number + th → ordinal
2️⃣ Special ordinal forms (irregular)
Some ordinals don’t follow the “-th” rule. You need to learn them by heart:
| Number | Ordinal | Word |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1st | first |

| 3 | 3rd | third |
| 5 | 5th | fifth |
| 8 | 8th | eighth |
| 9 | 9th | ninth |
| 12 | 12th | twelfth |
3️⃣ Numbers ending in “-y”
- Change -y to -ie and add -th
- Examples:
- twenty → twentieth
- thirty → thirtieth
- forty → fortieth
4️⃣ Using ordinal numbers in sentences
- This is my first day.
- She lives on the third floor.
