Ordinal Numbers

What are ordinal numbers?

• Ordinal numbers tell us the order or position of things.
• They are not the same as numbers that show how many.
• Example:
  • Number → how many: one, two, three
  • Ordinal → order: first, second, third

1️⃣ Most ordinal numbers: add “-th”

• For most numbers, just add -th to the number.
• Examples:
  • four → fourth
  • six → sixth
  • seven → seventh
  • ten → tenth

Rule: number + th → ordinal

2️⃣ Special ordinal forms (irregular)

Some ordinals don’t follow the “-th” rule. You need to learn them by heart:
