  • The Shinta Mani Foundation changed a family’s life (A2, past simple)

Make sure you did the unit on past simple.

How a poor family of five got a new home, clean water, and a small business

A long time ago, one family of five lived in Cambodia. They were very poor. Their house was broken, and they had no toilet and no clean water. Life was very hard for them. The parents worked in the fields, but they did not earn enough money to send their children to school.

The Shinta Mani Foundation came to their village and decided to help. The foundation built a new house for the family. It was strong and safe. They also built a toilet and a well so the family had clean water for drinking and washing.

The children received bicycles to ride to school. This made it easy for them to study every day. The parents got a microloan from the foundation. With this money, they started a small business selling dried fish in the local market.

Today they are independent and can take care of themselves. The house and toilet keep them healthy, and the well gives them safe water.

  • Ratanak’s asking himself, „Why is a ‚Marathon‘ called marathon?“ (past simple, A1)

and what do the Greeks have to do with it?

The Story of the Word “Marathon”

A long time ago, in ancient Greece, there was a big war between the Greeks and the Persians. The battle happened in a place called Marathon. The Greeks won the battle even though the Persian army was very large.

After the battle, a Greek soldier named Pheidippides had an important job. He needed to run from Marathon to Athens to tell the people the good news that the Greeks won. The distance between Marathon and Athens is about 42 kilometers, which is a very long way to run.

Pheidippides ran as fast as he could without stopping. When he reached Athens, he shouted, “We have won!” and then he became very tired and died. This story shows great courage and strength.

Because of this story, people started the marathon race. The marathon race is 42.195 kilometers long, which is the same distance Pheidippides ran. The first marathon race was held during the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, Greece.

Today, the marathon is a famous running race all over the world. It reminds us to be strong, brave, and never give up.

Memories of a young lady, now Director of Food and Beverages at the Sheraton Senggigi

I worked as a waitress in a small restaurant. Every day I tried to be a perfect waitress. I always woke up early in the morning because I wanted to be ready and not feel stressed. First, I ate breakfast and checked my uniform. It had to be clean and nice, so the guests felt good when they saw me.

When I arrived at the restaurant, I smiled and said hello to my coworkers. I thought being friendly was very important. Before the guests came, I cleaned the tables, put on fresh tablecloths, and prepared the menus. When the guests arrived, I welcomed them with a big smile. I always listened carefully to what they wanted to eat and drink. If they had questions, I answered politely and tried to help.

Sometimes guests were in a hurry, so I brought the food quickly. Sometimes they wanted to talk, so I listened to them. I always checked if everything was fine at the table. At the end of the day, I cleaned again and said goodbye to everyone.

I believed a perfect waitress was kind, patient, and always ready to help. That was what I tried to do every day.

  • Channary, focused, trying hard to be a perfect waitress (present simple, A2)

    • how to…………, some advice by a professional

My name is Channary, and I work as a waitress in a small restaurant. Every day I try to be a perfect waitress. I always wake up early in the morning, because I want to be ready and not feel stressed. First, I eat breakfast and check my uniform. It must be clean and nice, so the guests feel good when they see me.

When I arrive at the restaurant, I smile and say hello to my coworkers. I think being friendly is very important. Before the guests come, I clean the tables, put on fresh tablecloths, and prepare the menus. When the guests arrive, I welcome them with a big smile. I always listen carefully to what they want to eat and drink. If they have questions, I answer politely and try to help.

Sometimes guests are in a hurry, so I bring the food quickly. Sometimes they want to talk, so I listen to them. I always check if everything is fine at the table. At the end of the day, I clean again and say goodbye to everyone.
