I recently stayed at a five-star hotel in Asia. The hotel was beautiful, the rooms were comfortable, and there were many good facilities. However, I was disappointed by one important problem: the English of many members of staff was not good enough for a five-star hotel.
I am not expecting every employee to speak perfect English. However, I believe that staff who have direct contact with international guests should be able to communicate in decent English. This is especially important at the front desk, in the restaurant and at the bar.
At the front desk, guests need to explain their needs and ask questions. They may want to change a room, arrange transport, ask about hotel services or report a problem. Simple words are not always enough. The receptionist needs to understand the guest and also explain the situation clearly.
The same is true in the restaurant. A guest may have questions about a dish, want to change an ingredient, order something that is not on the menu, or explain a special request. If the waiter only understands simple words such as “coffee”, “water” or “chicken”, real communication is difficult.
The bar can have the same problem. Guests may want a particular drink, ask about ingredients, request a different preparation or explain exactly what they would like. The bartender needs enough English to understand the request and check details when necessary.
What frustrated me most was that some staff seemed to say “Yes” even when they had not understood me. A smile and a “Yes, sir” are not enough. In a five-star hotel, I want to know that the person has actually understood what I am asking for.
Good English does not mean using complicated vocabulary. Staff need practical English for their job. They should be able to listen, ask simple questions, confirm information and explain things clearly.
A five-star hotel sells more than a beautiful room. It also sells service. When guests cannot communicate properly with the front desk, restaurant or bar, the quality of that service is affected. For me, decent English in these important guest-contact positions is therefore not a luxury. It is an essential part of professional hotel service.
This version also makes the distinction clear: not perfect English, but enough English for real two-way communication.

my visit to Rang Solok Baralek Gadang in West Sumatra
Dear Peter,
I want to tell you about a special event I visited during my trip through West Sumatra. It was called Rang Solok Baralek Gadang. The event took place in Solok from 10 to 12 September 2026. I was happy to be there because I wanted to see more of the local culture and daily life.
The festival took place in a large area of rice fields. This was one of the things I liked most. We were not in a city centre or inside a large building. We were surrounded by green fields, small roads and local people. Farmers and other people from the area were part of the event. The rice fields made the festival feel very connected to local life.
There were many traditional activities during the event. I saw people wearing traditional clothes and taking part in dances and music. There was also Silek, a traditional Minangkabau martial art. Another interesting part was Randai. It is a traditional performance with music, movement and stories. Many people watched the performances, and the atmosphere was friendly and lively.
I also saw traditional games and kites. There were small stalls where local people sold food, drinks and other products. Many families came to the festival, so it was not only an event for tourists. It was also a meeting place for people from the local area.
For me, the best part was being able to see local culture in a real village and farming setting. I could see how important rice is for the people of Solok. The festival helped me understand more about Minangkabau culture and life in West Sumatra.
I was very happy that I visited Rang Solok Baralek Gadang. It was a different experience from the usual tourist attractions, and I will remember it for a long time.
Best wishes,
Wolfgang

simple English can make a big difference in Asian hotels
Many tourists visit Asian countries every year. They stay in hotels in large cities, small towns, and popular tourist areas. When they stay in a hotel, they often need to speak English. They may want information, ask questions, or ask for help. However, English is not common in every part of Asia.
Because of this, communication can sometimes be difficult. A guest may ask a hotel worker a simple question, but the worker may not understand. The guest may repeat the question or use a translation app on a phone. Sometimes this works, but sometimes it does not. The guest can become frustrated and unhappy.
English is especially important for hotel workers who have contact with guests. At a minimum, front desk staff, restaurant staff, and bar staff should have enough English to communicate with international guests. These workers speak to guests every day. Front desk staff answer questions and help guests with their rooms. Restaurant staff take orders and answer questions about food and drinks. Bar staff also need to understand orders and simple questions.
Hotel workers do not need perfect English. They need English for common situations at work. They should be able to understand simple questions and give clear answers. They should also know useful words and sentences for their job.
Some hotels already help their staff improve their English. They give English lessons and let staff practise speaking. Staff can practise situations such as checking in a guest, taking a food order, or serving a drink. Some hotels also have workers with very good English. These workers can help other staff when there is a communication problem.
Other hotels do less to improve staff English. This can be a problem when many international guests stay at the hotel.
Better English can make hotel visits easier for both guests and staff. Guests can get help more easily, and staff can do their jobs with more confidence. Good communication can also help guests have a more pleasant stay.
