my visit to Rang Solok Baralek Gadang in West Sumatra
Dear Peter,
I want to tell you about a special event I visited during my trip through West Sumatra. It was called Rang Solok Baralek Gadang. The event took place in Solok from 10 to 12 September 2026. I was happy to be there because I wanted to see more of the local culture and daily life.
The festival took place in a large area of rice fields. This was one of the things I liked most. We were not in a city centre or inside a large building. We were surrounded by green fields, small roads and local people. Farmers and other people from the area were part of the event. The rice fields made the festival feel very connected to local life.
There were many traditional activities during the event. I saw people wearing traditional clothes and taking part in dances and music. There was also Silek, a traditional Minangkabau martial art. Another interesting part was Randai. It is a traditional performance with music, movement and stories. Many people watched the performances, and the atmosphere was friendly and lively.
I also saw traditional games and kites. There were small stalls where local people sold food, drinks and other products. Many families came to the festival, so it was not only an event for tourists. It was also a meeting place for people from the local area.
For me, the best part was being able to see local culture in a real village and farming setting. I could see how important rice is for the people of Solok. The festival helped me understand more about Minangkabau culture and life in West Sumatra.
I was very happy that I visited Rang Solok Baralek Gadang. It was a different experience from the usual tourist attractions, and I will remember it for a long time.
Best wishes,
Wolfgang

Yesterday, I visited Kampung Naga, a traditional village in West Java, Indonesia. I travelled there alone, so I hired a local guide at the entrance. He came with me to the village and explained the local traditions and daily life.
Kampung Naga is in a green valley between hills and rice fields. To reach the village, visitors have to walk down more than 400 steps. The stairs are long, but walking down was not a big problem. I took my time and enjoyed the green view around me.
When I arrived, I saw many traditional houses. They stand close together, and the village is very clean and quiet. The houses have similar shapes and natural roofs. There are no large modern buildings in the village.
My guide told me about the people and their way of life. The community has strong traditions, and the people respect the rules of the village. Families live close to each other, and neighbours know and help one another. People work, look after their homes, and spend time with their families. Many parts of daily life are still connected with old traditions.
I walked through the village with my guide and looked at the houses and the area around them. He explained some of the important places and told me about village life. It was interesting to see how the people keep their traditional way of life.
After the visit, I had to walk back up the more than 400 steps. This was the difficult part of the trip. The stairs seemed very long, especially because I was already tired from walking around the village. I had to stop several times to rest.
It was warm, and I was sweating a lot. My legs became heavy, and every step seemed harder. For older people, the way back up can be very exhausting. They should walk slowly, take breaks, and bring enough water.
I really enjoyed visiting Kampung Naga, and having a local guide made the visit more interesting. However, the long climb back to the entrance is something older visitors should think about before they go.

a special day in a Toraja village begins in a church and continues with traditional music, clothes, dancing, and family life
Dear Rina,
Last week, I went to a Toraja wedding in a small village in South Sulawesi. A friend invited me because his family knew the bride’s family. I had never been to a Toraja wedding before, so I wanted to see it. The wedding had two main parts. First, there was a church service. After that, there was a traditional event in the village.
The wedding started in a church. The bride wore a beautiful white dress, and the groom wore a dark suit. Their parents, family members, and friends sat together in the church. The priest talked about marriage, family, and faith. The bride and groom made promises to each other and gave each other rings. They also prayed together. At the end of the service, the priest gave them a blessing. Everyone sat quietly and listened.
After the church service, we went to the village. The traditional event took place in the main square. It was near a tongkonan, a large family house of the Toraja people. There were many chairs in the square. There was also a large space for the people who came to the wedding. Many guests were already there when we arrived.
The bride and groom changed into traditional Toraja clothes. Their clothes had bright colours and beautiful patterns. They also wore jewellery. They looked very different from how they had looked in the church.
Some older family members had an important part in the traditional event. They talked about the two families. They gave the young couple good advice and good wishes. They also welcomed the guests and thanked them for coming.
Then the traditional music and dances started. Some people played music, and other people danced in the square. Many guests watched the dancers, talked to friends, and took photos. Some family members came from other villages for the wedding. The square was very busy.
Later, everyone ate together. People sat with family and friends and talked. The event continued for several hours.
I liked the wedding very much because I could see both parts of Toraja life. The day started in a church and then continued in the village with Toraja music, clothes, dancing, and other traditions.
It was a very nice day, and I was happy to be there.
Best wishes, Indra

BODY LANGUAGE
Sometimes students have problems with their classmates. They may want the same thing. They may have different ideas. Sometimes one student says something bad to another student. The other student may feel sad or angry. A small problem can become a big problem when students do not talk about it.
First, stay calm. Do not shout. Do not use bad words. Sit down for a few minutes and try to feel better. Then think about what happened. What did the other student say? What did you say? Why are you angry or sad?
Next, talk to your classmate. Find a quiet place and speak in a nice way. Tell the other student how you feel. You can say, “I was sad when you said that.” You can also say, “I did not like that.” Then listen to your classmate. Let the other student speak. Do not speak when they are speaking.
Try to solve the problem together. You can say sorry if you did something wrong. You can share things or take turns. You can also make a new plan. You do not need to have the same ideas. It is OK to think in a different way.
If you cannot solve the problem, ask your teacher for help. The teacher can talk to both students and help them.
Students can have problems at school. Stay calm, listen, and use nice words. Then you can solve the problem and have a good day together.

Fatima tells Zayna about her experience at a cultural festival in Solok
Dear Zayna,
How are you? I want to tell you about the Festival 5 Danau, which I visited in Solok with my family last year . We had heard that it was an important cultural event in the area, so we decided to spend a day there. We left our house early because we wanted to arrive before the festival became too crowded.
When we arrived, the area was already full of people. Families had come from nearby villages, and some visitors had travelled from other parts of West Sumatra. There was a lively atmosphere, with music playing, people talking and groups of visitors moving around. We walked through the festival area and looked at the different activities before choosing what we wanted to see.
One of the first performances we watched was a traditional Minangkabau dance. The dancers wore colourful traditional clothes and moved to the music. After that, we watched a martial arts performance. The performers moved very quickly and showed a lot of skill and concentration. I found it particularly interesting because I had never seen this kind of performance at a local festival before.
Later, we explored the area around the five lakes. We enjoyed the beautiful views of the lakes, green hills and nearby villages. We also stopped at several small stalls where local people sold handicrafts, clothes and other products. I bought a small handmade item as a souvenir. While we were looking around, we spoke to some villagers, who told us about their traditions and everyday lives.
In the afternoon, we watched a cultural parade. Groups from different villages walked through the festival area wearing traditional clothes. Each group had its own style, and some carried objects that represented their village. I liked this part of the festival because it showed how much local people valued their traditions.
We stayed until the main events had finished and then returned to Solok. We were tired after such a busy day, but we were happy with our experience. The festival gave us the opportunity to learn more about Minangkabau culture and to meet people from the surrounding area.
I thought you would have enjoyed it too. If you visited Solok one day, I would definitely recommend going to the Festival 5 Danau.
Best wishes,
Fatima
