    Chapter 4 – summary

Bradley’s mother goes to school because Mrs. Ebbel wants to talk to her about Bradley. Before she leaves, Bradley shouts that Mrs. Ebbel is a liar. His mother is worried because she knows that many of the things Bradley tells her are not true.

In Bradley’s classroom, his mother sees many good school papers, but none of them have Bradley’s name. She also sees a chart with gold stars for the students. Bradley has no stars.

Mrs. Ebbel tells Bradley’s mother that Bradley has a serious behavior problem. He does not behave well and makes school difficult for the other children. His mother says that deep down Bradley is a good boy. Mrs. Ebbel says that Bradley must decide if he wants to be part of the class. She also says that the school has a new counselor, Carla Davis. She wants Bradley to see the counselor once a week.

Mrs. Ebbel takes Bradley’s mother to the counselor’s office. The room is very messy because Carla Davis has just moved in. There are boxes, papers, books, games, and crayons everywhere.

Carla Davis is young. She wears jeans and a T-shirt with “ROCK ’N’ ROLL” on it. She gives Bradley’s mother a form to sign. Bradley’s mother signs it, so Bradley can see the counselor.

Carla says that many teachers have already told her bad stories about Bradley. However, she is not afraid to meet him. In fact, she says she cannot wait to meet him and thinks he sounds charming and delightful.
